Pilot is up and running
2009-11-30 14:56 by Stefan Jongerius, NOTS Foundation, via web
At the moment the pilot project is up and running. Realized: 7 filter (for 300 liter) for 12 households of 5 members (60 per filter / filters 7 x 60) = 420 people in total. These 12 households per filter are represented by a committee and pay tk 35 monthly for the use of the filter. The project is well received by the community, the villagers are satisfied with the performance. For the project to roll out on a larger scale, the price of the filters currently the biggest challenge. This must be drastically reduced.

Transport filters
2009-11-30 14:29 by Stefan Jongerius, NOTS Foundation, via web
Transportation of all materials to the villages was costly for poor roads, and flooding of the river, it was difficult to reach villages with all materials. Eventually, the first 3 filters were all placed in Krisnakathi. Because of poor roads Jalapur was unattainable. Only later was possible to place the remaining 4 filters in Krishnakathi - Athgoria and Jalapur .

3 pump heads were specially manufactured for NIAS, as the previously selected supplier had stopped. This brought some delay in the project.

Filter production
2009-11-30 14:22 by Stefan Jongerius, NOTS Foundation, via web
The production of the filters turned out to be much more expensive. To get started with the pilot NOTS decided to begin with 7 locally manufactured filters. So instead of 90 filters, we placed 7 in 2 communities instead of 5. And instead of 150 liter tanks we used 300 liter tank, so that 12 instead of 6 households per filter are able to get access to clean drinking water.

NIAS involves and empowers the communities. Local partner PRIDE, builds a relationship with the local communities through awareness activities, discussions with stakeholders, establishing an information center and the seeds and vegetable growing program for income-generating activities and basic medical care for patients. The community forms a committee of 12 households per filter and pay a monthly fee for the use of filters, are responsible for the maintenance of the filters and contribute to the construction and installation of the filters.

With a young designer NOTS has been working towards a conceptual design which can be used in Bangladesh. Together with PRIDE we are now optimizing this design to a cheap and functional principle.
