Sanitation facilities
Sanitation facilities in the villages Bona, Sissa, Soukurani and Toungana
views
Summary
In most rural villages in Burkina Faso there is a lack of proper sanitation. As a result villagers do their “business” in the neighborhood of their houses. Very often it is very close to the house which is very bad for the hygiene of the whole household. Especially for women the lack of intimacy create very difficult situation. They have to wait at night to take care of “business” and this can be very unsafe. This is particularly true for young girls.

Detailed information
Bona is a village with 1300 inhabitants located 35 km west of Bobo-Dioulasso. Most residents are descendants of the Bobo tribe. Most of them are animist (there is no separation between the spiritual and physical (or material) worlds, and souls or spirits exist, not only in humans, but also in other animals, plants, rocks, natural phenomena)
Sissa is a village with about 600 inhabitants and is located about 75 km from Bobo-Dioulasso. Most residents are descendants of the mossie tribe. They constitute approximately 40% of the population of Burkina Faso, about six million people. The Mossi have a rich culture with beautiful artworks. Especially their sculptures is very impressive.
Toungana is a village with about 2,150 inhabitants and is located about 50 km from Bobo-Dioulasso. Most residents are descendants of the Bobo tribe.
Soukourani is a village with about 1100 inhabitants. Most residents are descendants of the Bobo tribe. Most of them are animist.
Current status
Some of the people are richer than other and they have invested in latrines. All the villagers realize the importance of the latrines. Latrines are per family and it is difficult to share them with another family. The 54 latrines we want to build is only the beginning of this project. We hope that the success of thd project will bring more demand from the villagers. The families who are participating in this project are selected by ASAP foundation.
First we have to search for funds to build 54 additional latrines in the villages Bona, Sissa, and Toungana Soukourani. We will add this project on the Akvo.org platform.
A latrine is mainly material and manpower. It is also important that the hole and the construction is properly be done to insure sustainability. We estimate that for a family of 10 this type of latrine will be ok for a minimum of 10 years. Changing the latrine’s place will only require some cement, some supporting bricks and manpower
Split of the work:
1- Family :
• Digging the hole
• Providing 200 bricks for the walls construction.
2- Association :
• Providing 42 support bricks for the walls and the dalle
• Providing the dalle
• Providing cement
• Providing the mason
• Providing transport of the goods to the village
The total cost of a latrine: €142 -
€45, - will be paid by the families and €97, - is paid by sponsors. The latrine is designed with no door. A door is a relatively expensive cost. A mason will be hired to ensure quality of the masonry.
Outcomes:
• More comfort for the families. People can now go to the toilet any time of the day. Previously they had to wait until it was night.
• Decrease of deceases linked to dirty water. Especially deceases like cholera and diarhea will be less
• Improvement of hygiene
• More safety for women and young girls
The villagers realize the importance of building latrines. But it is difficult for the head of the family to find the resources for it. At the moment there are 130 latrines available in the villages. ASAP Foundation wants to build 54 additional latrines in Bona, Sissa, Toungana Soukarani. This will be improve the hygiene and the safety of women and young girls in rural areas.
Goals
- 12 extra latrines in Bona
- 21 extra latrines in Sissa
- 16 extra latrines in Soukarani
- 5 extra latrines in Toungana
Proper use of latrines is guaranteed because:
- We are sure that the villagers will be use the latrines because they have requested for these sanitation facilities.
- They participate themselves in the building of the latrine.
- The women will make sure that they are clean since they want to use it.
- Training already happened at school since all the school have latrines.
