Project in depth
Focus area
Water and sanitation Categories: Education, Maintenance, Product development, Sanitation, Training, Water
Detailed information
Many villages is Njombe district are eager to increase acces to water and sanitation, as they are almost 100% relying on self supply from unprotected sources. The distance to watersources is up to 6 km from the house. Conventional watersystems with pumps are proven to be unaffordable, unsecured from energy supply and lacking funding from government. The poverty rate is high.
Current status
Negotiating the banking contracts between WaterRight and 3-6 SACCOS'es. Fundraising for additional grants to support the kickstart funding of businesses and to support the poor with some grants access to be enabled to buy the water facilities. Selection and training of SACCOS'es and Village Action groups (already ongoing in actual parallel going programs with SHIPO)
The role of all participants is complementory and crucial for:
- Village Action groups : awareness, social control, marketing, support in program guidance
- The 7 local business partners: handdrilling equipes, manufacturers of rope pump, filter distributors
- The SACCOS'es, local banks who provide the vouchers to both producer/supplier as well as to the end consumer
- SHIPO: program management and selection and contracting the grant support to the ultra poor and the business set up.
Access to safe water and adequate sanitation by business development for 16.000 people, with employment, reduced health costs and increased food productivity. The set up of a revolving Fund to accelarate further expansion of the business in the region.
Goals
- 16.000 people served with safe water access
- 7 local entreprises established
- 180 well drilled and equipped with a rope pump
- 800 latrines realized
- A revolving fund, containing 50.000-70.000 in credits
The blending of grant and micro credits, using existing channels, partnering in private and public sector and ackowledgement and social inclusion support by the local NGO establishes a sound and constructive environment with a revolving Fund in place to enable future further investments while need for grant is diminishing. The capacity building on level of expertise and knowledge, on organisationl level and on institutional level in both civil society as well as private sector and banking sector assures the sustainability of the program in future.
