Ceramic Filter Production
Introduction of ceramic water filter production in Bafoussam Cameroon
Status
Active
Focus area
Location
Bafoussam
West Province, Cameroon
This project aims to send representatives of the "Prespot" pottery centre (Cameroon) to a ceramic water filter conference in Sri Lanka, and set up equipment for Prespot and ADEID to start producing ceramic water filters.
Target benchmarks
- 30000 persons with access to improved water
Ultimately, low cost ceramic water filters will be available on the local market in the Baffousam area, giving the population an affordable tool to improve the family's drinking water. The goal of this first step to local water filter production in Cameroon is to facilitate start-up of production and establish contacts. (see details)
Target benchmarks
- 30000 persons with access to improved water
Sustainability is guaranteed by setting up the filter production to operate as a business and sustain without external financial support. This only works when there is a real market for the filters. A distinction should be made between the retail market, which are often the middle class families who have enough education to know about the potential risks of drinking unsafe water and who have disposable income to spend on the filter on the one hand, and the NGO and institutional market on the other hand, buying filters for free or subsidized distribution to very poor families. By further developing these two markets, filter production and sales can be sustained by free market principles.

PRACTICA foundation, together with ADEID, the partner NGO in Cameroon and PRESPOT, a pottery centre in Bamessing, Cameroon have now started planning the implementation of the project. Recource Development International, a NGO in Cambodia producing first class ceramic water filters, has been contacted to provide equipment for the filter production facility in Cameroon and to provide training for the artisans of PRESPOT in the production of ceramic water filters.

At the gala party that market the end of the 2008 'de Parade' theater festival, a cheque was handed over with money collected at the toilets of the Parade. With this money available, PRACTICA has contacted the field partners in Cameroon to start joint planning of the upcoming activities.
