Target benchmarks

  • 8 functioning water systems
  • 480 persons with access to improved water for 10 years
  • 8 persons who receive training / education per year

This project will select 4 workshops from these 3 regions to attend a 4-week training on rope pump manufacture. These workshops will then be contracted out by Voahary Salama to supply the family rope pumps to be installed on wells drilled using Rota Sludge.

Target benchmarks

  • 8 functioning water systems
  • 480 persons with access to improved water for 10 years
  • 8 persons who receive training / education per year

Voahary Salama will ensure sustainability by integrating these trainings into the ongoing cadre of activities within the “Improving Family Planning and Increasing Access to Safe Water and Sanitation Project in rural Madagascar” funded by USAID. These trainings are complementary to rota sludge trainings previously funded by Voahary Salama to introduce and disseminate low cost drilling technologies in their target regions. Voahary Salama and its local partners will continue to monitor the quality of the products produced by the local workshops for the remainder of the project. All workshops will be encouraged to become members of regional DIORANO-WASH committees that coordinate the water and sanitation sector activities in their respective regions.

Rope pump installed on tube well - Ivato

During the training 8 pumps were constructed.
Initially the pumps produced during the training was supposed to be installed on existing well for family purpose. The trainees requested to get with them a sample of the pump in order to respect the standard manufacture quality when the will come back to their workshop: 3 pumps went back with the workshops based in Ambositra, Fianarantsoa and Betioky, One pump installed on a tube well in the Bushproof yard for demonstration, one pump installed on an open well in Ivato for family use, three pumps installed in Fianarantsoa and Ambositra by partner organisations of Voahary Salama (Ainga and Saf FJKM).
This training is complementary to rota sludge training previously funded by Voahary Salama to introduce and disseminate low cost drilling technologies in their target regions. Voahary Salama and its local partners will continue to monitor the quality of the products produced by the local workshops for the remainder of the project.

Portfolio: rope pump training

Portfolio: rope pump training

The training of 4 workshops took place from March 2nd till 28th. 8 technicians were trained on the construction, maintenance, installation and repair of rope pumps. During the training 8 pumps were built and 2 installed. The project is almost completed. It remains the installation of 6 pumps to be installed before the end of April by Voahary Salama.
The evaluation of training shows the great interest of workshops for this pump as a new product with a big potential market to bring low cost solution for manual pumping for small communities.
A follow up of the initial training will be done by Pratica in order to check the quality contruction and to reply to difficulties encountered.
