Quest for sustainability

The project is well underway. Already 13 villages like Mkahara village have been provided with a borehole. Not all drillings were successful and the project management is now in the process to make sure that the villages with unsuccesful drillings (2), will gain access to water anyway. As such the project is also exploring the possiblities of alternative water sources. Recently an expert mission of Waterschap Velt en Vecht and Aqua for All concluded that the project is very comprehensive and integrated, but that there is room for improvement in the field of sustainability of water facilities. Following that recommendation, AMREF's project management team is in the process of amending the scope towards more sustainable solutions. The project excels in linking up the communities to the realisation of the facilities. Volunteers and pupils at schools are trained in health promotion and in turn these children and volunteers educate the communities (see photo and film). In this way, a health promotion movement is created. Photo above: Mkomo school health club performing for the community. The pupils present a brief skit, showing the advantages of the clinic as compared to the traditional healer.
