Pump Aid is a water and sanitation organisation that tackles poverty by working with local communities in southern Africa. We do this by establishing sustainable supplies of clean water and safer sanitation provisions. Pump Aid has developed a low-cost, sustainable and appropriate technology – The Elephant pump and toilet to provide these solutions to water and sanitation. Both of these have won the prestigious St Andrews Prize for the Environment, and Pump Aid won the World Bank Market Place award for innovation in 2006.
The long-term effects of our work will ensure improved health and increased agricultural production. Pump Aid works in Malawi and Zimbabwe, we also have a pilot programme in Liberia.
